  • Suggest they join WaterLegacy.

4.  Volunteer

Help WaterLegacy ensure clean, plentiful freshwater in Minnesota and the Great Lakes basin.  It's amazing what committed citizens can accomplish together, and have FUN doing it.  Support water-protection actions and public education about enhancing and preserving water quality in Minnesota and the Great Lakes basin.

Do your part.  Volunteer to help WaterLegacy ensure clean, plentiful water for generations to come.  On the Membership form, select all Volunteer check-boxes that apply.  For "Other" creative volunteer options, tell us your inspirations and preferences.  They could include:

  • Talking to friends and relatives.  A great deal of public education occurs from one person to another in families and other groups. Carry copies of the WaterLegacy handout (PolyMet talking points one side and WaterLegacy description other side) and the "No Sulfide Mining" petition to share and collect signatures. See links on Home page.
  • Write letters to editor or articles for publications.  Let your voice be heard. Timely opinion letters and articles are effective in raising visibility of the reasons for sulfide mining opposition. Tell it from your own viewpoint. Assistance is available (review/editing, media placement suggestions). Use the Contact form.
  • Collect petition signatures.  Help distribute petitions and collect signatures opposing sulfide mining in Minnesota because it is far from certain to be safe to human and wildlife health and to the environment. Virtually everywhere sulfide rock has been disturbed to mine minerals, the water has been polluted. Minnesota should not allow such mistakes. Distribute the one-page petition..  By collecting signatures, you can briefly raise signers' awareness of the threat to clean water posed by sulfide mining.  And you can connect them to WaterLegacy for further information and support.  These signatures will be presented to key public officials in batches at strategic times.
  • Tabling at events -- Staff a display table at public events (festivals, fairs, conferences, etc.); talk with people and distribute printed information.  You can organize your own tabling at a local event or join others at their events to help protect our precious water resource through public education.  Distribute the one-page handout  and other materials found on the Home page and What Is Sulfide Mining? page.
  • Write comments to agencies.  NOW!  Environmental review and other agency procedures involve public participation in the development of permits and other regulation.  Your opinion as an informed citizen counts.  Comment on the PolyMet DEIS until February 3, 2010.  You can comment online or request a DVD or paper copy (at a cost) from the MDNR or borrow one from listed locations.  You can start or join a citizen group to generate comments on your concerns or analyze a selected subject in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement.  Use the Contact form to inquire about topics that interest you.
  • Represent your group as Liason to WaterLegacy.  Both Groups and Individuals can join WaterLegacy.
