Connection
Why are you interested in WaterLegacy? Are you being directly affected by sulfide mining proposals? If yes, please explain here -- you can help establish your right to protect your property, your way of life and your health and enable WaterLegacy to alert you to plans that may affect you. WaterLegacy possibly can provide ways you can influence decision-making. Please fill in the Connection/Interest items below. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
PolyMet's NorthMet metallic sulfide mining project could affect surface and groundwater quality and groundwater levels in a large area surrounding and downstream from the proposed open-pit mine (Partridge River) and the processing facility (Embarrass River) in the St. Louis River watershed. (See map at the PolyMet Project menu, http://waterlegacy.org/polymet_project.) The following ways you use the land and water could be impacted by pollution, fluctuation in the water table, or habitat destruction. Please list all that apply in areas affected by the proposed project: Fish, Hunt, Camp, Harvest wild rice, Harvest culinary herbs, Harvest other food plants, Harvest ceremonial/healing herbs. Describe other uses here. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
If you own or rent potentially-impacted property (by the PolyMet mining project on or near the Embarass, Partridge or St. Louis Rivers in the lake Superior watershed), please LIST addresses and descriptions. This information will be used only to inform you by email about plans that may affect your property. Put each item on a separate line or separate them by commas. No HTML allowed. Volunteer
Support water protection actions and public education about enhancing and preserving water quality in Minnesota and the Great Lakes basin. You can connect with other citizens and together, we are more effective. Volunteer to help WaterLegacy ensure clean, plentiful water for generations to come. Select all Volunteer check-boxes that apply. For "Other" volunteer options, tell us your inspirations and preferences. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
A great deal of public education occurs from one person to another in families and other groups. Carry copies of the WaterLegacy handout (PolyMet talking points one side and WaterLegacy description other side) and the "No Sulfide Mining" petition to share and collect signatures. See attachments on Home page, http://waterlegacy.org/home. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
Let your voice be heard. Timely opinion letters and articles are effective in raising visibility of the reasons for sulfide mining opposition. Tell it from your own viewpoint. Assistance is available (review/editing, media placement suggestions). Use the contact form http://waterlegacy.org/contact. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
Help distribute petitions and collect signatures opposing sulfide mining in Minnesota because it is far from certain to be safe to human and wildlife health and to the environment. Virtually everywhere sulfide rock has been disturbed to mine minerals, the water has been polluted. Minnesota should not allow such mistakes. Distribute the one-page petition found on the home page -- http://waterlegacy.org/home. By collecting signatures, you can briefly raise signers' awareness of the threat to clean water posed by sulfide mining. And you can connect them to WaterLegacy for further information and support. These signatures will be presented to key public officials at opportune times. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
Join with other protectors of our precious water resource at public events. Staff a display table with printed information. Distribute the one-page handout found on the home page -- http://waterlegacy.org/home. You can organize your own tabling at a local event or join others at their events. Environmental review and other agency procedures involve public participation in the development of permits and other regulation. Your opinion as an informed citizen counts. For example, see the "PolyMet CPDIES documents" page. You can join a citizen group to analyze a selected subject in the Environmental Impact Statement as drafted. Use the contact form at http://waterlegacy.org/contact to inquire about topics that interest you. The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly.
